Deciding on the what to share on the first post of the year isn’t as easy as one might think. I have been going on about how I want to promote more musicians and bands because I feel there is a lot of great talent out there being overshadowed by the electronic music scene of bedroom producers and all that. But still good music is good music and it does honestly mostly come down to that.
2014 on TGBE will begin with something very lovely, something very beautiful and something very well produced. I decided to review this new song by Devin Spear. “Lullaby” is just that, a lullaby. It was written, produced, arranged, engineered, and performed by Devin Spears. He plays the guitars, djembe and sings while the strings are arranged by Jonathan Wesley, the bass played by Markus Huber. It was co-produced, mixed, rhythms arranged, vocals produced and engineered by my good friend and virtuoso Matthew Shell of MTS Music.
Matthew Shell never ceases to amaze me with the quality of production and musicianship featured on his productions. Devin played the guitar on other excellent projects with MTS Music. He was the guitarist on the Carolyn Malachi‘s song “Beautiful Dreamer” as well as Matthew Shell and Trey Eley‘s “Beauty In Freedom.” So I was already aware of his talent and as a guitar player and guitar lover myself, I can honestly say that his skills on the instrument are excellent. He has a passionate and sensitive tone that I admire. One of the hardest things to develop as a musician is one’s own sound.
Devin Spear hails from Falls Church, VA. “Lullaby” is his first ever song release after several gigs as a session musician as well as songwriter, guitarist, and co-producer for all of pop artist Sydni Alexander‘s songs. Just listen to those recordings and you will see very quickly how talented Devin really is. (Click on Sydni’s name in the last sentence to go there).
“Lullaby” itself is pure sonic euphoria. With vocals reminding me of M83, Devin definitely will have a very successful career ahead of him. I’m very pleased that I have the opportunity and have had the opportunity in the past, to catch this rising star before rising to high out of my reach. So play this lovely song before you turn in for the evening and you will be sure to have a lovely slumber. Let the strings and the soft vocals bring you peace and relaxation.
Keep an eye out for Devin Spears, he’s rising fast, and it’s fun to say you knew him from the beginning.
