Gypsy Music had a crazy resurgence in the 1990’s with “New Age” artists, but in the 2000’s when the “street” took it back to the street and away from the white middle class audience, the music returned to a truer Gypsy aesthetic. I always love when a style of music or other cultural artistic movement returns to its roots and leaves the money-obsessed musicians who bastardized it for profit.
Whether it is Gypsy Bass or Cumbia Balkanica, Gypsy music fits perfectly with whatever new wave of music is being produced. Bellydancing Gypsy vibes will always have a place within the innovative music making community.
This is where Brooklyn Gypsies comes in. Comprised of NYC based musicians and producers, Brooklyn Gypsies explores modern society and global concerns. Fusing with other styles but always staying true to the Gypsy root sounds, these artists are brilliant contributors to the new world sound – yet maintaining an air of timelessness.
Their debut album Sin Fronteras (Without Borders) is being released by the wonderful Wonderwheel Recordings, one of the great leading labels of modern Global music. It will be officially released on May 5th, 2015 through various digital music stores.
Their single Fafisa is an intense sonic pleasure. Mixing a lot of traditional Gypsy sounds and concerning the Zeb remix-a hint of Dancehall rhythm.
The Brooklyn Gypsies are TAKUYA NAKAMURA (programming, synth, keys, trumpet), TROY SIMMS (sax, effects), Kristina Normatova (bass & vocals), CARMEN ESTEVEZ (percussion & main vocals), Brandon Lewis (drums).
