One of the things I like about Colombia is the music, the variety that my country has is amazing, and something that makes me very happy is being able to share through this radio program and blog. Tonight I propose to follow the Atlantic coast trip and learn a little more of ‘Porro’.
This is a proper musical rhythm of the Caribbean region of Colombia , specifically the banks of the Sinu River in the department of Córdoba, Sucre and the savannas of the department of Bolivar, with some valuable input from the departments of Atlántico, Magdalena and Antioquia.
This rhythm in the performance is a bit faster than the cumbia and believed formerly played with indigenous instruments, scholars argue that its origin was born in pre-Columbian times, pipers from groups of indigenous origin, and then it was enriched by the African rhythm. Later it evolved to be assimilated by the wind bands of military character, and then were incorporated European wind instruments like the trumpet, clarinet, trombone , euphonium and tuba, among others.
One hypothesis states that ‘Porro’ is named after a small drum called cheerleading, the other says it comes from the porro, or striker manduco that the drum or bass drum hits and another action or whack.
Welcome to two hours full of cumbias, gaitas and porros.
