It’s official: Zouk Bass has taken over the scene!
For those of you trying to figure out what the Zouk Bass deal is all about, here’s the story so far:
On February 15th, Buraka Som Sistema, famed Portuguese electronic Kuduro crew, played a DJ set for the infamous Boiler Room series, and the footage got uploaded to YouTube, as with all Boiler Room sets. The opening track is something we’ve never heard before. A new rhythm, definitely not Buraka’s. The MC announces that this is their new style: “We call it Zouk Bass!”
The Internet quickly came to the rescue to provide us with the name of the the mystery first track: “Tarraxo na Parede” by London-based DJ Kuimba, who eventually made the track available for download. At this point, the usual “new genre” cycle happens: it gets posted on popular blogs, who get criticized for jumping on the bandwagon without doing their research, people attempt to get in on the craze early by making hurried tracks, some producers decide that tracks that they had previously made under a different genre were actually Zouk Bass tracks, and people argue endlessly about the authenticity of rhythms and producers. And the winners in all this, of course, are us DJs who get to eat up every single download!
As it turns out, Zouk Bass is much more related to a style called Terraxa than it is to the style known as Zouk. Others have already posted some of the context so I won’t bother with that. But here’s the exciting part! An exclusive mini-mix from yours truly showcasing some of the sounds of this crazy new world known as Zouk Bass. Much respect to every artist invovled, whether their track was made 2 years ago or whether it was made in response to the Zouk Bass craze. And a very special shoutout to DJ Kuimba, who still has yet to receive public credit from Buraka. Let’s see where this ride takes us, and in the mean time, enjoy some Zouk Soundz on behalf of The Global Bass Experience!
