Another Black Friday has passed here in the States. For those who don’t know Black Friday, it is probably what you think it is. We take one day a year to celebrate all the prominent and influential black leaders who helped gain political and social equality for their race. Yeah Black Friday is a good day, perhaps the best.
Well I just lied to those who don’t know. Black Friday is a horrible day when consumers emulate cattle not just by choice but also by social pressure. If you suffer from anxiety problems while stuck in a crowd of people drooling over worthless junk they’re convinced they must have because the “price is right” (but with my extensive Internet shopping experience I see better prices than these discounts all year long, which makes me wonder sometimes if I’m the only person left who uses the Internet for things other than pornography and Facebook), then Black Friday is not for you. It is not for me, that is certain.
While the “sheeple” were out trampling each other for prized junk, I kicked back and played my guitars all day, then took in a live comedy gig later at night. I also celebrated all the prominent and influential black leaders who helped gain political and social equality for their race.
Let’s start things off this week with a mix from the podcast Cumbia Dub Club hosted and mixed by Petardo. Starting things off with a shout out to Huayno with a unique modern approach, the mix then goes off into other realms of Cumbia Dub with a lot of Nu Cumbia masters.
I first heard of and started sharing Polymiller’s tracks a couple years back. It’s been a while since I’ve heard something new from him. His digital infused Cumbia is some of the best out there. “Fiebre Sonidera” hits the spot, if the spot is the desire to hear some innovative Cumbia Digital.
Man do I love me some Sinatra. I’m a huge fan of his actually and also of a lot of his friends, specifically The Rat Pack. It could be said that I know too much about him actually, well it has been said.
So when I read in the title of this mashup by Mashup Mexico than Sinatra would be mashed with the legendary first incarnation of La Sonora Dinamita, La Sonora Santanera, I was intrigued. The rhythm works, the instrumentation mashed with his vocals are a bit off as far as staying in key is concerned, but still it’s a cool attempt and something definitely worth checking out.
It took me a few months to first hear this next one, about six apparently, but it’s never too late. This is a pretty sick Cumbiathon edit of a song I haven’t heard for quite some time now, Gravediggaz “1-800-Suicide,” by Jabberwockk.
It looks like Cassette Blog will be celebrating it’s third anniversary for the rest of the year. Hey three years is a good run so far so why not celebrate for two to three months? The latest LP to come out is another big collection of top players in the scene. It’s called “Mueve Calavera.”
Our good friend Kaygee still keeps things going with his “La Selva” radio show out of Madrid, Spain. He again visits the roots of Cumbia by digging up old Afro-Colombian tunes as well as oldies from other regions. La Selva is a good show with a good mission. Every once in a while I like to pay them some respect and share their podcast episodes. Check out this newer one from a few days back.

This should have appeared last week but I barely missed it in time to get it on. This week is perfectly fitting for it though, it being TropiKhongo’s new wild edit “Mi Playa Bella.”
We have something new and exciting from Los Chicos Altos. This time around featuring Palo Q’Sea. This is a single off their new EP, which will be out on Urban World Records this December, 2nd. I think when they mix with bands like Palo Q’Sea their sound really goes to new deeper places. I’m a sucker for live musicians so it’s always going to win points with me if they are a part of new songs, a rare thing these days, but soon it won’t be so rare because we are coming back to be seated on our rightful thrones (don’t worry DJ’s you can still play our music on your laptops ;p).
I’m sure many of the readers of TGBE know this song “Mayoral.” Well by way of Novalima, Sabogal brings a whole new approach to it with a very dope Cumbia refix.
I’m very curious about this upcoming EP on Caballito. It’s Exta Machine’s and it sounds really interesting just from this little taste he gave us. I’ll keep you posted.
In Madrid there is a duo you probably know by now, Guacamayo Tropical. Well they’re coming out with a new EP, which will also consist of remixes from others, I don’t know who else but I do know I will be one of them. This is not their new EP nor does it contain any music from it but it is a serious mix of great music, many of which I’ve covered in the past couple of years.
Here is a little mix by Puño de Guiro, I thought it was cool because it has a few songs from very recent FFC posts. Well worth checking out to hear some recent tracks.
To end things I chose a special remix LP from our very good friend Orihuela M.S.S. He just dropped this on Bandcamp. It is an excellent album filled with very cool remixes of his song “Amalucan” featuring talented remixers like Yelram Selectah, Bootlegumachine!, Pa Kongal, Dany F, Randy Salazar Jr., El Catorce, Zoonido, Ritmo Bestial and Club de Baile C’DM.
We have some exciting exclusive releases coming very shortly. This new week we’ll see an exclusive single from Oye!Simpson off his new EP he’s doing with The Global Bass Experience. I have been excited for this for a long time now and it’s almost time. So keep an eye out for that. We will surely remind the hell out of you anyway.
Another project has come to the table from the mind of our Spanish Funky Friday Cumbia writer Jaime Melendez Medina a.k.a 4:20 Music Flavor – a.k.a. R.C.A. He has decided to hold a little event where he gives out free downloads of old school Punk Rock to be edited or remixed or re-fixed as Cumbia. He will make the official announcement and have the songs for you to download shortly. I do know the first EP will consist of these bands and their songs:
Misfits-Lastcares, Fugazy-Place Position, The Clash-Capital Radio One, Operation Ivy-Sound System and The Damned-Love Song.
Look out for this coming very soon. It will be called “Anarcumbia” and the art will look like this:
I know it’s Saturday night/ Sunday morning but still Happy Black Friday everyone and to all a good night/morning.
Peace
