Remember the Dengue Dengue Dengue “Simiolo” remix contest held by Chusma Records? What a mess that was. I, along with everyone else it seemed, was totally confused during the onslaught of entries. I didn’t want to share any of the remixes until they were all in, just for the sake of confusion alone. It’s been a few months now, a winner was crowned, but finally I will share them all here on FFC with you. I had it setup or so I thought, to cover this contest as it was going on but the confusion all around seemed to prevent that from happening. But it is only fair that I share the complete collection of entries here now because there are some really good remixes on it. So if you can manage to listen to the same song over and over again in different forms here you go!
Our fearless artist Tu Guaina returns with another interesting take on Cumbia. We can always count on him to come through with the bizarre but very good.
Andrés Digital’s big day will be this Saturday when he releases his “Reggae Inna Cumbia Style Volume 2.” Yesterday he set us up with a single to help promote it. The single being the already well received “Rub-A-Dub Anthem.”
Here we have this cool little video courtesy of “Yo Me Llamo Cumbia.” It is like a beginners guide or rather introduction to Cumbia and a few different basic styles from different nations. Most of the Funky Friday Cumbia readers are more advanced Cumbieros and know everything this video covers but for those who may have found themselves here searching for a basic understanding of what Cumbia is and for those who wish to explain it to others, this video will be of some use.

Philthy Dronez will soon be coming out with an exclusive TGBE Cumbia EP. I honestly am very excited for it. For now though we do get a glimpse into what a Philthy Dronez live set is like with this live recording of Mr. Philthy performing at the Oakland Art Murmur presented by Mutiny Radio.
[email protected] is one of those dudes that always produces some of the dopest remixes. He recently took on Major Lazer and Tribilin Sound System making Jah No partial VS Cervaje!
I have been a fan of Pa Kongal for a long time. He goes back to the days when I first started getting into this whole Nu/Digital Cumbia thing and he is still a strong presence in this scene. This however isn’t quite Cumbia but has bits of it in it. It was produced for a Happy Colors remix contest. It’s filled with Pa Kongal goodness and his unique remixing style throughout.
People are still shocked when they find out about a Tropical Bass scene happening in Japan, more so when Cumbia is one of the styles, even more so when they see a Cumbia band completely made up of Japanese musicians. Nice J has been my correspondent on various blogs because he’s at the heart of it all. Nice J brings us the news but also from time to time he brings us something of his own. Thus is the case with his Coconuts Beat Club edit, a Moombahton/Cumbiaton party track.
This next tune is very catchy, simple and fun. La Changa Dice delivers a chill Cumbia that fits well in the middle of a long mix or when you just feel like kicking back.
Now that you’re in a trance this new Cumbia from Club De Baile CD’M will weave its way into your brain, but in the best way.
Earlier this week Regional Label dropped a modest yet very enjoyable compilation featuring all South American artists, save one Bigote. The tracks on here come from some of the best Nu Cumbieros out there, which means the expectation of quality music is high. I say this compilation meets or perhaps even exceeds such expectation.
Temporal Volume 1 for now with Volume 2 hopefully not too far away.
We wrap things up this week with a favorite Cumbiero of mine as well as DJ, Albert DJ Style. He brings us this excellent short but effective Cumbia mixtape.

I know I mentioned last week that I would get back to exploring a classic Cumbia artist this week, but alas I pull the same stunt again with a promise – crossing my heart as I write this – that I will return with a legend next week… promise!
Peace
