My favorite holiday is again upon us. There is a lot of hate for Halloween, or so it seems from my encounters. A lot of hate seems to come from one of these sources; outside the U.S., hardcore Christians, hardcore Muslims, and foreigners who have migrated to the U.S. There are some too who are from the U.S. and just don’t care for it for whatever silly reason. I’d like to say why I love it.
Besides the fact that I’m pretty much year round in a Halloween mood so-to-speak, the reasons why I love this holiday above all others are as follows:
No one feels guilty for spending money on this holiday. For example Christmas is always under fire from just about everyone on a high horse claiming that the meaning of the holiday suffers because consumerism seems to be the biggest aspect of the holiday. There is a lot of guilt felt around Christmas but no such guilt exists around Halloween.
There are no obligations. We aren’t expected to do anything we don’t want to do. We don’t HAVE to visit relatives we don’t get along with, we don’t have to participate in the holiday in any way.
It’s pure fun and joy. Anything we can imagine, we can create. It’s a time when no on judges anyone for their love for imagination. Except maybe if you’re a religious person and unhappy with the way a lot of women dress for Halloween. Other than religious oppression (which is felt year round), the sky is the limit to our creativity.
We mock the things that frighten us the most and by doing so we demystify and dominate our fears. Halloween mocks death and all the horrible ways one can die. We laugh at our fears as we embrace our freedom of expression. How is this a bad thing? And why would anyone sane have any negative feelings toward such a holiday.
Well I love Halloween and I always will. Last year and the few years before I released some sort of music compilation. I call on artists to contribute, produce and direct videos, and spread the holiday cheer for at least the entire month of October. This year however is different. I’ve been incredibly busy with life; school full time takes a lot out of me, work part time takes up a lot of time as well, playing in a gigging band performing original music is time consuming, and then my love life with my girlfriend is where the rest of my time goes.
This year I’ll be in Las Vegas celebrating Halloween. My girlfriend and I are going to see Ghost perform at The House of Blues then celebrate with all the crazy Halloween in Las Vegas activities.
Before I head out though I do have one lovely Halloween musical treat for all of you. Trusty Calavera Calavera is one of my favorite artists these days. I’m still loving every album and single release from them and never tire of their awesomeness.
Calavera Calavera delivers the goods this Halloween. While I failed to produce anything substantial, I knew I could count on them.
This is their new single Anti-Christian Empire – now that’s an empire I can get behind!
