Tonight is a tropical Night with conceptual music. That means we will hear some tracks where different strokes and musical images of cityscapes are described.
Tonight I invite you to listen to a music recommendation that I loved, the album called “Chavez Ravine” which is from a legendary guitarist Ry Cooder, who at this time keeps his passion for Latin American music.
Years ago, it was the brain behind the successful producer of the Buena Vista Social Club, who dusted off the chest of memories, like Ibrahim Ferrer and Compay Segundo.
Now he moves to the border to transfer the sinuous of Mexican culture as a resident in the U.S. And to do it he appeals the past. In this case, a concept album that tells the story of the forgotten Chavez Ravine Chicano barrio of the city of Los Angeles.
Chavez Ravine is a CD with a spirit absolutely Chicano, in Spanish, English and Spanglish, with rhythms of old times. lots of humor and an unwavering character. While it can be heard as a conceptual work, a sort of opera Tex Mex, the songs are enjoyable one by one, separately.
Several chicanos glories like Ersi Arvizu and Little Willie G. (that glows in the spicy “Muy fifí”), the accordion of El Flaco Jimenez (old known from the Cadillacs), the voice of Juliette Commagere (and “Chinito, Chinito”), the occasional piano of Chucho Valdez and the great Lalo Guerrero appear here.
And to complete the night, we will hear some of the tracks of Buena Vista Social Club – Live At Carnegie Hall (2001). Recall that the name comes from a social club in “La Habana, Cuba”, where members practiced activities related to dance and music. It became a very popular site, where they were performing music and who were part of it. In the 1990s, nearly 50 years after the club was shut, it inspired a recording made by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and Ry Cooder with traditional Cuban musicians, many of them former members of the club that arose when popularity was at its peak. The recording, named Buena Vista Social Club, by the institution of La Habana, was an international success and the group was presented with its full formation in Amsterdam in 1998.
